Animals: Our Spiritual partners by
Barrie Rissman
The energy of the new millennium is inspiring more people than ever to seek a return to wholeness, to be drawn to spiritual growth over material gain, and to experience on a deep and profound level a sense of oneness with the life force that connects all creation. Becoming aware of our spiritual partnership with animals is essential to our progress on this path. Animals,
no less than humans, are living souls. I do not say that they
have souls, but that they - as well as all life forms - are souls.
The physical being does not merely include a soul, as some might
believe; instead, the soul is paramount, manifesting in many bodies
during its journey, choosing to incarnate for the unique experiences
a particular form can provide. To truly know and experience our
soul connection with all life and to grow and develop spiritually,
we must recognize and honor our sacred connection with animals,
for they have much wisdom to share.
In
communicating with animals both domestic and wild, I have become
aware of their great willingness to be our helpers and guides,
to teach and to learn in partnership with humans. Unfortunately,
humans historically have perpetrated on animals a systematic and
devastating Holocaust. We drive entire species to extinction.
We exterminate countless millions of domestic animals in death
facilities and slaughter billions of farm animals for food that
is completely unnecessary for human sustenance. We torture and
kill numerous species to test cosmetics and other products, and
murder a multitude of other beautiful life forms whose skin or
fur is coveted for human adornment.
Nevertheless,
the souls of animals remain steadfast to their purpose. In this
new age of compassion and spiritual awareness, let us be open
to the great gifts they offer us. It is not at random that certain
animals become companions to certain people. We may not recognize
the real significance of the dog or cat who appeared one day outside
our door, but souls are where they need to be at the appropriate
time and place - and in the form to which they know we will respond.
We can be assured that a very special soul has entered our life
for a reason, and that the reason has everything to do with spiritual
growth.
