WHAT IF...
By Betsy Cagle
There’s much ado these days in the spiritual community about the Law of Attraction. For those of you who may not be familiar with this law, according to the Law of Attraction one tends to attract what one thinks about. In other words, your thoughts determine your destiny. It is said by using the power of one’s mind, one can set their thoughts, energies, and vibration to the frequency of what one wishes to attract into one’s life, such that like attracts like. I’d like to challenge that notion.
Most of you will agree there have been times in your life when an event has happened and you’ve probably said something along the lines of, “It was just meant to be,” or “I had no control over it, it’s like it just happened,” or “It was like something or someone was guiding me and I was just going along for the ride.” The event was far, far beyond anything you had ever thought would happen to you. In fact, you never even considered things could be different in your life because it just wasn’t in your mind to make it different. Now, according to the Law of Attraction, because your thoughts were aligned with continuing your actions just as they were, there should be no way for something just the opposite to occur because vibrationally you just weren’t lined up for this event to happen. So why did it?
Why is it that at times things seem to happen to us and we feel like we are just going along for the ride? Why is it sometimes they are small every day things, like knowing you need to get up off the couch and exercise, but something is keeping you sitting there eating chips and watching TV? And on rare occasion, something big happens and you know without any doubt in your mind, a miracle has just occurred in your life. Maybe you are a drug addict, have been for many years. You are deeply engrained in the drug habit and there are no thoughts of not being a drug addict. All of your thoughts, therefore your actions (according to the Law of Attraction), are geared towards finding your next fix. And suddenly, without warning one day, as you go about the business of being a drug addict, you literally feel the need for your next fix leave your being. And at that moment, you KNOW you will never do drugs again. You know it deep in your soul.
What’s happening here? Are these two examples different in any way except the first seems to happen with regular occurrence and the second only happens once in a Blue Moon? Perhaps in the first example, one could say your thoughts were more aligned to sitting on the couch (Law of Attraction), but in your mind, maybe you truly desired to lose 30 pounds. You knew you would feel better. You knew you would look better. You knew losing the weight might attract the mate of your dreams. You could even see the skinnier you in your mind’s eye. Yet, there you sat.
In the second example however, your thoughts were completely aligned with doing what you always did, with no thought given to changing, no desire to change. And yet the evidence something quite the opposite did happen is stark in its truth. In your heart you believe only Grace could have done this. But what if Grace were also touching you in the first example as well?
Here’s where it gets a very dicey. Let’s put skepticism aside for the moment, because this is the realm of the spiritual where logic doesn’t work and faith needs to step in and lead.
What if it’s true we are all ONE? What if “we” are simply an illusionary part of the Whole? If our separation from the Whole is illusionary, wouldn’t we actually be That? And if we are That, wouldn’t every moment, every action, every thought be perfect just as it is? And here’s the kicker…what if “we” have no control? What if That Which IS is experiencing through each of us, and we are simply reading and acting the lines of a play given to us by That which IS? What if That Which IS chooses for “us” to experience the physical, and before we arrive, we are in a sense given a script containing our every thought, our every action, our every feeling, our every emotion, every little thing, knowing it can’t be changed or edited in any way because we are already That Which IS. So, we “memorize” our script and instantly find ourselves in the physical where we promptly seem to forget our lines. Yet, in the exact moment they are needed, the next line comes, be it a thought, an emotion, an action, whatever. Can you see how Grace is always there in this scenario? Grace must be there, as ONE is never apart from Grace because ONE is Grace. All that happens is simply the ONE experiencing a part of Itself, and decisions about what will happen have already been made. “We” aren’t doing anything. “We” don’t really exist.
Yes, I can hear you all screaming, but what about free will? In this scenario how can there be room for free will (put that in your pipe and smoke on it for a while)…or perhaps in another sense, ONE is immersed in free will as ONE is free to live out the script ONE was given. Is your head spinning around like the girl in The Exorcist yet?
Until next time…….
